cat lady

I had been planning to make a rustic looking coffee table for my deck for some time now-
in my head it will be paired with this couch even though it is far out of my price range. Some day. So I had some flaky white painted wood (which has been sealed so they can't chip it off btw) and for some reason that I can no longer recall decided that I should make a channel for grass in the table. I think it was originally to make the pieces of wood I had work out better. It then occurred to me that the cats would like it (they are grass fiends and there isn't any in the yard) and I added a second planter for catnip. It has turned out to be such a successful cat table that I don't really get to use it much. On the bright side this (so far anyway) has cut back significantly on the sitting in/on potted plants that was starting to be a problem. So everyone is happy. Now if only I could get that couch...

***Update*** I added directions hopefully they make sense.

Wow, that's awesome! Is there any chance you might post the plans you came up with to make this? I'd love to attempt one of my own =)

I love this table. I might just copy the idea after I move to my bf. Cute cats, too :)

Yeah I can try and draw up plans- it uses mostly reclaimed wood so it's unlikely that you'll find things are the exact same size, but it should give you a starting point. Thanks diverka- they are cute!

This is a spectacular idea and creation! I just found it from the post on Moderncat. Your kitties look very happy, and how smart to let them actually lounge IN the grass. My cat is on my lap watching me type on my laptop, and she says she wants one, too. :-)

We saw your project on moderncat and came by to say how much we like it. We both like to chomp on grass halms too.

I saw it on modern cat too and I think it's great!
Lovely rustic table - even though the grass is good for the cats I think it's a great decorative touch.

I wish I had room to make one for my Frida as well... You really know how to make a cat happy :)

I too saw it on Modern Cat.

It is a great idea that my cat is going to love once I get it made... Did you plant regular grass or wheat grass?

Looks simple enough to build, 4x4 legs, 2x6 sides???

Thanks for sharing, I will post mine on my blog when I get er' done.

I love this idea. Would you please post the board measurements? Also, what did you line the planter holes with?

I have some old boards left from another project taken from a friend's deck replacement.
I have lots of lawn grass, once the snow finally goes away, but an entire planter of catnip would mean heaven for my cats.

More info, Please?

Just love it!

I read about your creation on Moderncat and I just wanted to say this is a one of a kind DYS jewel. What a wonderful idea! I sent the link to my daughter who loves to work with recyclable wood and I'm hopping she'll make one for her cats and one for mine. Your furbabies are beautiful and look like they enjoy their lil patch of grass. Thank you so much for sharing.

I *so* need to make one of these for my kitties! It'd be so nice for them to have a bit of nature on our apartment balcony! Thanks!

Also saw your idea on Modern Cat. Wow! This is the most functional, budget friendly idea I've seen in a very long time! I absolutely can't to construct a copy your idea . . . hopefully it will turn out as nice! Thanks for sharing the awesome inspiration.

Oh WOW! Jessie this table is so cool. I look forward to you posting the plans as I'd like to try my hand at one for all my furkids.
Thanks for sharing >^..^<

This is absolutely beautiful! I bet my cats would love it, too. Thanks for the great idea.

Thanks everyone! I posted my dimensions and somewhat rambling directions-- let me know if you have any questions. I used regular grass, but wheatgrass would be fine too, it's just not as hearty and take as much abuse. (ie cats sitting/chomping on it every day... not to mention snow) It's really a pretty simple construction, just boxes joined together, so it can be easily modified for your dimensions. I'd love to see pictures if anyone else makes one- thanks again!!

I loved this when I saw it on Modern Cat. I don't have the time to make one but I really would buy one. If you sold a dozen at $100 a piece then there's your couch money. I feed a stray on my porch and he would enjoy laying on this a lot. Let me know where to mail the check!

That is a good point Stephanie... I'll have to think about it after the semester ends.

I just saw this searching for things to make for my cats, and this is one of the coolest finds. I am going to try to make an indoor version, because that large section, with some hinges would make a great storage place. Thanks!
